Bake the Cake. Serve the Cake.
By Deanna Vigliotta National Sales Manager, Seni USA | Founder, The Traveling Saleslady
Smart salespeople understand how to bake a cake. Not because they love desserts but because great sales, like great baking, require preparation, patience, and purpose. No great cake (or deal) happens by accident.
First, You Learn How to Bake
No one bakes a great cake without learning how.
You either:
have someone show you, or
seek out training on your own.
Professional sales is no different. The strongest sales professionals invest in learning, through mentorship, coaching, practice, and continuous education. Skill always comes before consistency.
Next, You Gather the Ingredients
A cake doesn’t come together without the right ingredients.
In sales, those ingredients are:
clear messaging
strong collateral
the right tools
thoughtful timing
Just like baking, it’s not only what you have, it’s how much of each. Too much messaging overwhelms. Too little leaves confusion. The mix matters.
Then, You Mix with Intention and Choose the Right Pan
Once the ingredients are ready, you don’t simply throw them together.
You mix with purpose and you choose the right pan.
In sales, this is how your offer is built:
how it’s positioned
how it’s packaged
how it’s presented
Even the best ingredients can fail if the structure doesn’t fit the situation.
Respect the Bake Time
Every cake has its own bake time.
Some are quick. Some take patience. Some need to be checked more than once.
Sales cycles work the same way.
Some deals close quickly. Others require:
more questions
more conversations
more reassurance
Sometimes you pull the cake out, take a look, and realize that it needs more time. That doesn’t mean it failed. It simply means the process isn’t finished yet.
When It’s Done, Celebrate the Win
When the cake is ready...Success!
You’ve won the deal.
However, great salespeople know the job isn’t over yet.
The Frosting: Value After the Sale
The frosting is the value-add.
This may look like:
marketing support
education and training
partnership beyond the contract
It’s what turns a transaction into a relationship and a customer into a long-term advocate.
The Most Important Step: Know Your Guests
Here's the part too many salespeople overlook.
Know your audience. It is critical because if you spend all your time baking the world’s best chocolate cake, and your guests prefer vanilla, you won’t have anyone to serve it to.
Sales success isn’t about perfection. It’s about alignment.
Bake the Cake. Serve the Cake.
Learn the craft. Use the right ingredients. Respect the process. Know your audience.
When it’s done, make it a celebration that becomes a frequent tradition.
That’s how great sales careers are built.
